The importance of reading and writing
There are many benefits to teaching kids how to read and write.
Not only will they have better academic success, but they will also be better equipped to navigate life as adults.
Here are 4 reasons why it’s important for kids to learn how to read and write:
1. Reading helps kids learn how to think critically. When they read, they’re forced to use their brains in new ways and figure out what the story is about. This can help them become better problem-solvers later on in life.
2. Writing is a tool that kids can use to communicate with others. When they write, they’re able to express themselves and share their ideas. This can help them feel confident about speaking in public or communicating what they’re thinking with others.
3. Reading helps your child develop strong vocabulary skills. Kids who read often learn to expand their vocabulary and build powerful grammar skills. This is critical because it helps them understand what they’re reading, which leads to better comprehension and critical thinking.
4. Reading and writing help build your child’s self-esteem. When kids can read and write well, they feel proud of themselves. They know that they can communicate their thoughts and feelings in words, which helps them feel confident and competent.
Why do kids struggle in reading?
Many people think that kids naturally learn to read quickly and easily.
However, this is not always the case.
In fact, many kids struggle to learn to read because of a number of factors, including:
- Poor vision or eyesight: If a child has difficulty seeing words on a page, they may have difficulty reading.
- Learning disabilities: Some kids have trouble learning to read because of delays in their brain development.
- Developmental problems: Some kids struggle with early reading skills because of things like poor motor skills or attention span issues.
- Lack of practice: If a kid doesn’t practice reading, they may not improve as quickly as they might if they were more engaged in the activity.
- Lack of motivation: Kids who struggle to read often lack the motivation to continue with the activity.

Our experience with Night Zookeeper
I will say that Night Zookeeper is maybe a little advanced for my six year old daughter. I will also say that we couldn’t keep her away from the game.
She’s asked repeatedly to play it. She loves typing out the sentences, describing her creature for her creature “reports”, and exploring the story of the Night Zookeeper.
We have to help her a lot with the spelling, punctuation, and making proper sentences, but she loves learning all of these things while playing.
We also loved the concept of Night Zookeeper so much that we purchased the full set of books.
That’s a 5 book series written by Joshua Davidson about a boy named will becoming the Night Zookeeper and protecting animals from the evil Voids.
We try to get a chapter in each night. They are a little on the longer side for a 4 and 6 year old to listen to each night, but the 6 year old loves the story and asks to read it every night before bed.
They are great for reading to the kids now, and we know they will love to read them themselves when they get older.

Helpful tips to teach your kids reading and writing
There is no one right way to encourage your child to learn how to read and write.
However, as a parent, it is our responsibility to provide the necessary tools and resources so that our children can develop a strong foundation for these essential skills.
Here are some tips to teach reading and writing to your children:
1. Introduce the basic concepts
The first step is to get your child comfortable with reading and writing. Introduce basic concepts such as letters, words, and sentences. Once your child is familiar with the basics, begin teaching them how to read simple stories together or by themselves.
2. Have them read words aloud.
This is probably the most well-known method of teaching kids to read, and for good reason! By hearing words pronounced out loud, they learn how letters work together to create words
3. Have them practice writing short sentences or paragraphs.
This will help them develop their ability to string together ideas and communicate effectively in writing. You can also have them write about topics that interest them in order to develop their vocabulary and broaden their knowledge of the world around them.
4. Encourage word puzzles.
Word puzzles are an excellent way to encourage your child to learn how to read and write words. By providing them with challenging puzzles they will be able to improve their vocabulary while having fun.
5. Hire a tutor
Consider hiring a tutor for your child to specifically focus on their reading and writing abilities. A tutor can provide structure and help your child improve their skills quickly. This can be a great way to give your child the extra support they need as they continue developing these important skills.
Things to keep in mind when teaching your child reading and writing
Teaching your child to read and write is an important part of their education, but there are a few things you should keep in mind when doing so.
1. Make sure your child has a good grasp of the alphabet and basic letter recognition. This will help them become more fluent in reading and writing.
2. Be consistent with your teaching methods. Do not give up on your child if they struggle at first; they may just need some practice to get better at these tasks.
3. Give them rewards when they achieve milestones in their reading and writing skills. This will encourage them to keep practicing and improving their skills.
4. Give them plenty of opportunities to practice their reading and writing skills. You can do this by providing them with books, magazines, and other materials.
